>> in the news this sunday morning, even bigger crowds are expected in san francisco today for the giants, 49ers, bluegrass, and many more events. we will have a live report. and occupy protesters return to city hall but this time they announce a departure date. i'm terry mcsweeney in for carolyn tyler. let's take a quick look at the. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> yesterday was beautiful. today starting off with a little built of fog. temperatures cool, low 50s north. but for today we are expecting still that area of low pressure to stay offshore so that will allow for a mix of clouds and sun with low to mid-60s

coastside into the mid-70s the inland valleys and then a sharp cooling trend as we get to the evening hours and sunset. but we are still looking for the system to move closer to the coast, move over parts of the bay area and spread not only cloud cover, but still the chance of showers. timing is changed, though. i'll tell you good it coming up. terry. >> thank you very much. the annual fleet week celebration will wrap-up today with huge crowds expected to enjoy another airshow by the blue angels. and then will double up when the columbus day parade moves through north beach. we are joined live from the embarcadero with more on all of the stuff. good morning, cornell. >> hey, terry, good morning. san francisco knows how to throw a party but how about a half-dozen parties at the very same time? that's what's going on in san francisco. if you are coming to the city, as at least a million people did over the weekend, check it out. there will be lane closers, especially on the embarcadero.

we will tell you more about that this a moment. but first check out the fireworks over san francisco last night. just beautiful. celebrating fleet week and those amazing blue angels who put on quite a show yesterday over the waterfront thrilling crowds. don't forget about the giants. playoff action begins again tonight at 6:30. most people heeded the warnings and took public transportation. even those folks who were heading to the waterfront, crissy field area, to see america cup yacht racing action on the bay which starts again today at 1:45. truly something for everybody today. >> mostly we came in to see the giants but we came in early to see fleet week. we want to see the blue angels and we want to go -- there's lots to do here today. >> the blue angels and the fleet week, that's why we are here. there's too much to do. >> and don't forget about that hardly strictly blue grass. so cool.

that festival going on in golden gate park again today. at least two or three other festivals also happening in san francisco today, including the castro street fair, which will have market street closed at astro street. check out these barricades here. these will be in place from washington street north, all the way down to pier39. if you are on the edge bark dare row this morning and say, hey, what's going on, this is for bikes and pedacabs. the whole idea is to keep cars off the embarcadero. for the most part that did happen yesterday. personal note, i got on the embarcadero about 2:30 yesterday. what was i thinking, right? but i will never do that again. lesson learn. >> hope you enjoyed sitting in your car and looking around because you had time to think. thanks very much. mayor mayor ad lee said more

six-year-old girl was hit by a mini van in the parking lot had died. it happened a little before 9:00 a.m. on south gate avenue as children were leaving a religion class. yellow police tape and red circles mark where the bodies of two women and the six-year-old lay after being struck. >> the two mothers were victims. i saw them lying, one in the grass and one in the pavement. and then i saw the seven-year-old kid, she was in shock. >> the last time he saw the child she was breathing. she died here at san francisco general hospital with the other two female victims were brought. one of the women is the mother of the six-year-old. what brought the tragedy closer to the reyes family was their girl knew their girl. >> it was my son's classmate. >> parishioners were shocked and saddened by the accident. according to dennis reyes, the female driver of the anyone any

van mistook the gas pedal for the brake pad and struck the three as they left the parking lot. >> my three grand daughters, they all went to catechism here. it was railroad sad for both families involved, everybody involved. >> the driver was still on scene when the officers arrived and she has not been arrested. >> abc7 news. >> in hercules police are looking for a examplar as family, friends and neighbors held a candlelight vigil last night to remember a woman found murdered in her home friday night. they ended up died guying the victim as susie koe. her husband claims the the murder enter the house through an unlocked patio door and he he said it is a safe neighborhood. >> my wife feels safe to work on the yard, you know, even at night. we have good neighbors here. something like this happening is extraordinary. i just don't understand why people don't have any regard for

human life. this is just terrible. >> the family's vehicle was stolen and police are looking for a 2011 sky blue suburu outback with idaho plates. >> police in san francisco are looking for a man who tried to run down an officer. it happened in san francisco's bring sidio on lincoln avenue. united states park police officers say they saw a man trying to break into a car. when they tried to stop him, police said he got into another car and then tried to run the officer down. police fired at the suspect, but he got away. lincoln boulevard was closed while investigate -- while officers investigated that. san francisco's suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi will find out tuesday if he keeps his job. the mayor suspended america after he pled guilty to charges in march coming from a domestic dispute with his wife on new onw new year's eve. he will keep his job unless nine

supervisors vote to fire him. so far most supervisors have been mum about how they will vote tuesday. this morning occupy protesters are camped out at city hall had after police decided in the middle of the night to allow them to stay. it always havoc pooer protesters were in city hall last year. the group plans to stay there until at least noon today. about ten protesters remained after police left the scene about 1:00 this morning. organizers say the protest was only supposed to last about 24 hours. an anti-police, anti-capitalism march in san francisco this weekend ended with view cyclones arrest. it was in the financial district. police called it an unlicensed march and arrested people who refused to leave the area. they smashed windows at a starbucks, threw bags of paint. women called the police a cog in the machine. >> what they do to me they do to people all the time.

they work on behalf of the banks and corporations and don't serve the people at all. >> a search of backpacks discovered ice picks, hammer and paint and rocks. earlier a san francisco police officer was slightly injured during a loud but mostly peaceful anti-war protest downtown. as demonstrators marched the officer was cut by fallen broken glass from a window above. witnesses say someone accidentally broke the glass trying to you shut the window. it involves the 11 year anniversary of nato involvement in afghanistan, the longest running american conflict in our history. and three homes had to be evacuated of a explosive devices were found. they were in casanova park. they were bottled filled with a clear rick width and 4 metal foil around them. a robot was used to disable the bottles and the park was open by late afternoon. still ahead, you have never paid more at the pump.

hasn't moved much at all. in the days ahead, if you look at the time lines throughout the day today, several hundred miles west of the bay area. we are planning on another very nice day, although maybe a little cool for this time of year. look what happens on tuesday. actually tuesday night into wednesday. you will notice the south bay, the peninsula, santa cruz mountains. maybe an isolated shower and then the track continues far south. so you folks north of the golden gate maybe not seeing anything at all but perhaps some of the higher elevations. otherwise it sinks south into southern california. we are on the back side of it for a good portion of the week. 67 today in oakland with mid-60s in the city. so very little temperature change from yesterday. low 70s concord, 72 in san jose. and down by the monterey bay. looking good now with 64 in monterey, 75 in morgan hill. once again, the blue angels featured today with sunny conditions. we are looking at nice, low 06ths about 1:00, 2:00, probably

mid-60s by about 4:00. head today candlestick. usually a breezy place. once again we will see a few clouds around, a little bit of a breeze. about about 6 1:30 and then mid-60s. and the look ahead, temperatures here showing low 70s, warmest areas. mid-60s. and then look at that, we are getting sunnier after this little system pushes east and south and that will bring numbers back into the mid-70s. so really not a whole lot of change day-to-day. we will be keeping track of the system because it's kind of hard to forecast when they are cutoff from the main branch of the jet stream. but i have to tell everyone it's not too late to win $49,000 from abc7. these people are taking the chance. deborah v of richmond, wendy w of san mateo and kimberly m have entered. it will be announce after the

people in nine states. the cases are all linked to a steroid made by a specialty pharmacy in massachusetts. the steroid has been recalled. meningitis affects the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. in a bay area neighborhood a rat infestation blamed by the demolition of a nearby school. the rats came in after they started tearing down a prep academy back in august. the school closed more than a year ago because of poor test scores. neighbors claimed they never had a rat problem until now. the san francisco chronicle also reports that residents received a letter from the school district on friday and in it the district promises to help pay for roadent-proofing homes near the campus. in the last 20 years some of san francisco's biggest and oldest churches have closed their doors. now some of coming back. but in this assignment 7 report, abc7 news anchor carolyn tyler

says don't expect the plays of worship to open back up to church-goer the. >> people once filled the pews at st. joseph's catholic church in san francisco south of market neighborhood. >> i know people who grew up here and got married in this church. i know people who were buried in this church. >> today st. joseph's is empty, stripped of its sacred shaw ryans. now another big empty san francisco church in need of a new life. >> i thought it was so amazing, but it was sad that it had not really been touched for 25 years. >> chris foley bought the nearly 100-year-old building three years ago. he's working with developer brian spears to remake this historic landmark. st. joseph's was closed after the 1989 earthquake because it failed to meet seismic standards. >> the technology companies and getting so hot, what we decided do is got it approved as an office building. >> the plans call for 22,000 square feet of office space and

a restaurant. the exterior will be restored and the building brought up to modern codes. cost is what most often keeps churches from being restored. >> to rehabilitate a building like this is about $17 million to $19 million. >> st. joseph's is just a number of church buildings all over the city preservationists hope can be saved. >> the adaptation of a building like that that removes it from the vacant list that creates activity around and within a community or a neighborhood is far more valuable than seeing a building lie vacant. >> the second church of christ scientist on delores street was build back in 1915. it's an important architectural landmark. >> this is one of two wood-framed truss system domes in the city of san francisco. >> he is planning to turn the ornate church into four residential units. >> there would be three multi-level residential units on

the ground floor and one lost unit up here in this dome. >> neighbors fought to keep the building from being torn down. >> we prefer that the building stayed as a church, but unfortunately the congregation was smaller and smaller and they couldn't afford to maintain the building but they had no choice but to sell the building. >> neighbors support the plan to convert the church into homes. they already knew he could do it. less than a block away he restored another church, turning it into a multimillion-dollar home. >> and he put in a beautiful kitchen, and when we turn this into classrooms we will keep the kitchen. >> when the property did not sell as a home, the private children's day school bought it to convert it into a middle school for 180 students. the castle-like architecture will remain untouched. >> a tutor gothic hog warts ambience of the school is wonder it will for middle age student.

>> in san francisco, i would say the churches are probably worth being saved. >> but should every church be saved. that's the question being asked on this methodist church. it's falling apart. what hasn't rotted is vandalized. >> three or four structural engineers have said it's unsafe. >> the church closed nine years ago when the congregation shrank to about a dozen people. they could not afford the $6 million in repairs, so the church turned to developer john, and together they plan to tear it down and build 27 27 often of housing. >> this is all vandalism. >> but the it city is making it tough. last month officials rejected the plan, saying it would result in the demolition of a historic resource. >> religious institutions have the right to use and dispose of their property under both state and federal law. >> the church is appealing the decision. in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc7 news.

all right. this afternoon another cargo ship is scheduled to be launched from cape canaveral in florida to the international space station. the ship is financed by the private california company space-x. last may as you see in these pictures a similar ship docked with the station. they are contracted with n.a.s.a. to deliver several loads of cargo to the station. >> the fbi said the number of laser pointers being aimed at area planes is reaching an epidemic level. there could be 3700 less are attacks by the end of the year. that compared to just 283 incidents back in 2005. laser pointers can cause guilty to become temporarily lined. there have been at least 27 separate laser pointing areas in the bay area so far this year. some companies ever trying to turn around the world of printing. they are are creating 3d presenters that are getting closer to being able to be used in our homes. here's the cool technology. >> see the paper here? this is what you think of when

temperatures. we have a slower nature to the revolution of this pattern that is blocking an area of low pressure offshore. so live doppler 7 hd shows that we do have a little bit in the way of cloud cover and the marine layer has continued to be mixed on out because of this system that sits offshore. so that inversion is gone and we are just looking at some cool numbers into the 40s due to the clear sky, the calm winds, and with that the temperatures dropping to the due point. we do have some chilly readings there in the napa valley. 55 in the city with 54 in fremont and 52 in livermore this morning. we will call it partly cloudy. more clouds favoring the north bay. just a few high clouds today. plenty of sunshine. and the showers become a little bit more possible, but still edging toward the southern portion of the bay area come tuesday and into wednesday. so this system still staying offshore, and then sinking south. so notice, it really hasn't

moved at all. and that's because we have a blocking pattern going on, and with that a couple of systems rotating around the low and that's allowing for still some dryer air to be pushed into the bay. a lot of sunshine. and just us ting to look at this finally sinking to the south. but today, the forecast is just for a few high clouds and then come monday shower chances have been removed. it's not until late tuesday we will see a few more clouds, mid-level clouds swing on up and then into wednesday as the low sinks south, value california, southern california, maybe the higher elevations of the future bay, haven't cruz mountains could see an isolated shower but still not a whole lot expecting out of that. temperatures in the upper 70s so a little bit warmer today in sacramento with low 80s in fresno. a cool start in the mountain, though. low 60s for afternoon highs and dig
